2024 Irish School Students Trip to China
Organized by the UCD Confucius Institute and sponsored by Renmin University of China and the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, delegations from three Irish secondary schools—Our Lady’s Grove Secondary School, Kildare Community School, and Stepaside Educate Together Secondary School—embarked on an enriching cultural tour of China starting on October 24, 2024. A total of 56 students, accompanied by 8 teachers, participated in this unique educational journey, which took them to the historically and culturally vibrant cities of Beijing and Xi’an.
The students’ experience began upon their arrival in Beijing, where they engaged in a diverse array of cultural activities. Students participated in courses on Chinese language and traditional arts, deepening their understanding and appreciation of China’s rich cultural heritage. They explored iconic sites, including the Palace Museum and the Drum Tower, gaining insights into China's impressive historical and artistic achievements. The itinerary also featured a memorable climb of the Great Wall and visits to the Bird’s Nest and Water Cube Olympic venues, where students witnessed how Chinese traditions harmoniously coexist with modern development.
The students also had the unique opportunity to experience China’s high-speed rail, traveling from Beijing to Xi’an by high-speed train. Students from Our Lady’s Grove even enjoyed the comfort of an overnight soft sleeper, gaining a firsthand appreciation for the convenience and efficiency of China’s rail system. Many students shared that the high-speed rail journey left a deep impression, allowing them to witness China’s advanced transportation infrastructure and rapid modernization. In Xi’an, the students visited the world-renowned Terracotta Warriors Museum, strolled along the ancient city walls, and explored the Muslim Quarter, experiencing the city’s distinctive blend of multicultural heritage and historical charm.
Reflecting on the journey, students expressed their excitement to share their experiences with families and friends and many voiced a desire to return to China. Through this trip, they gained a profound appreciation of Chinese culture, language, and history, while building friendships that bridge cultural divides.
