Action Research: Exploring in Teaching, Teaching in Exploration

 

On May 18, 2024, UCD Confucius Institute successfully hosted the special lecture "Action Research: Exploring in Teaching, Teaching in Exploration." As part of the Irish Association of Chinese Teaching Seminar Series and the UCD Confucius Institute Teaching Skills Training Master Series, this lecture attracted more than 50 academics and students.

The lecture featured Dr. Lianyi Song, a senior Chinese Studies lecturer from the Department of East Asian Studies at SOAS, University of London, as the keynote speaker. The session was hosted by Selena Wilkes, Chair of the Irish Association of Chinese Teaching, with Professor Liming Wang participating in the interaction and giving a thank-you speech at the end. The lecture was divided into three main parts: Action Research, Case Analysis, and Taking Action. During the lecture, Dr. Song began with scientific concepts, providing a detailed introduction to the concept of action research. He showcased several exemplary research cases to demonstrate how to effectively conduct action research, delving into its importance and application methods. Throughout his presentation, Dr. Song continuously posed questions to the audience, using rhetorical questions to stimulate thinking. This approach kept the audience engaged, actively participating, and they found the lecture to be highly beneficial.

The lecture not only provided attendees with valuable theoretical knowledge but also demonstrated through practical cases how these theories can be applied in teaching practice. Attendees expressed that they greatly benefited from the session. After the lecture, Dr. Song engaged in a lively exchange and discussion with the audience, addressing issues they encountered in their actual teaching. This further deepened everyone's understanding of action research.
