First IICS Public Lecture Series and the 45th Confucius PhD Student Forum Successfully Held

The UCD Irish Institute for Chinese Studies (IICS) hosted its first public lecture of the IICS Public Lecture Series / 45th Confucius PhD Student Forum on 4 November 2021. Professor Liming Wang, Director of the IICS, presented the lecture titled “The Irish Economy and The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic” to an audience of 50 academic staff and research students.

Professor Wang firstly introduced the background of the economic growth enjoyed by both China and Ireland throughout the past 40 years. The lecture then presented an overview of the development of the Irish economy and identified key features of its economic structure, FDI and tax system. In the third section, the talk transitioned to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ireland’s response and its economic impact. Finally, the speaker provided insightful analysis on the economic recoveries and challenges which lie ahead for Ireland.

This lecture was the first of the public lecture series to be hosted by the IICS. Future talks will be held quarterly throughout the academic year via hybrid methods while following the health guidelines issued by the University and the HSE. All are welcome to join us here at the IICS.
